We bought Gus as a 2-year-old from a racing stud, where he was a nanny for Thoroughbred foals. From what we know from the previous owners, his sire was a Clydesdale x Gypsy Cob and his dam was a Quarter Horse. Gus had been broken in when we bought him and had roughly 10 rides under his belt.
Since owning him, he has had plenty of groundwork and has been desensitised to flags, bags, ropes, stock whips, tarps stones in a bottle etc. He has had many rides out on trails, both alone and in company. He has also been ridden along quiet roads with bikes, cars, and trucks and is not bothered by them. If heading out alone, he may need a bit of encouragement at first, but once he’s about 50 metres down the road, he settles into a lovely forward pace. He truly enjoys going out on adventures.
In recent months, we have focused more on his arena work, improving his transitions and working on his balance and forward movement. Gus has never bucked, reared, or bolted. He has been ridden by our whole family, and even my 6-year-old rides him.
Personality:
Gus is very sweet and a bit like a dog—he will come up to you in the paddock and follow you around. If you leave anything near him while he’s tied up, he will likely knock it over or try to eat it!
He is generally good to handle; however, he can be a bit pushy on the ground and sometimes gets into your personal space a little too much (the Clydesdale in him!). He needs someone firm and confident who can set clear boundaries.
Although Gus is a safe horse, he would suit an experienced intermediate rider to continue his education, as he is still young and green. He is not suitable for a beginner.
Quirks:
Can be protective of his food when fed around other horses.
Other than that, Gus is an amazing horse who, with the right education, could suit a variety of disciplines. He also has a beautiful canter and loves jumping puddles!
