Lumpy is a lovely gentleman to do everything with on the ground, shoe, clip, wash and rug. He has done miles and miles of cattle work. He's soft and responsive, currently used as a lead pony for breakers.
I have drafted Lumpy for full courses, but he is strong out on a course. Not suited to kids or anyone who can't hold one. Away from the actual course he's soft and you can chase cattle as hard as you need. At home he stays soft; it's an on-course thing. Someone has cooked him out there and hence I've sacked him.
He's a freak at team penning or sorting. Put him on the gate and nothing gets past. Work all day and go again tomorrow.
For vices, someone has taught Lumpy to take off lunging as soon as you saddle him. I've got him back to pretty good, but if he comes in fresh he will try it. I'd call it girthy, but he doesn't actually buck when he does it, he just rushes off to lunge, which is annoying. Man-made habit.
Lumpy floats or trucks and is happy to go out to work on his own or in company. Lumpy suits an experienced rider as he's a very smart horse who would put it over someone that is nervous or easily scared. He's a wise fella.
Suit feedlot, mustering, lead horse, team penning or sorting, drafting with a strong rider.
Lumpy does have some melanoma lumps around his throat. They may come against him in time, but have not been an issue nor have they grown further since I've owned him. As with most melanomas, old age gets them first.
